The Participation Conditions For Caricature Contest

SUBJECT : Nature and Man
The Subject of the year 2007 : Global Climate Change and Our World

In the last 10 – 15 years, a new problem was added to the basic ecological problems of mankind. Its name is “Global Warming and Global Climate Change”. The significance of this is emphasized by expressions such as “a new atmospheric danger”, “now the fever of the world is rising”. It is believed that this process which is caused by human influence and which is identified as “artificial climate change” is full of potential dangers for all the living-beings and abiotic environment and this change is not reversible. It is informed that the artificial climate change is completely different from the natural climate change, which is taking place since millions of geological eras and due to this, all the countries are concerned about this matter and these differences are explained as follows:

a. Artificial climate change is due to various activities of mankind. Since these harmful activities are continuing by increasing gradually, it is for certain that this development will cause potential dangers.

b. The climate change taking place in the geological eras took place over a very long period of time (thousands, even millions of years). However, the artificial climate change is taking place within 15 – 20 years which is relatively a very short period of time. Scientist are providing the following information regarding the matter:
When the temperatures in the far past, which are determined by special methods, were compared by the air temperatures of the recent 10 – 15 years (especially between the years 1988 - 2002), it was understood that the temperatures of the recent years were the highest ones in last 600 years until today.

c. Another characteristic, which discriminates global warming from the warming and cooling in the geological eras, is that this change is not regional but global. Actually, the simultaneous melting of the glaciers both in the north and south poles and the occurrence of the same process on many high mountains of the continents are the most distinct evidence of global warming.

The economic, ecologic and social conclusions that are created or will be created due to global warming and the process of climate changes that occur based on this, are not completely experienced in all parts of the world yet. Due to this reason, the potential dangers of this process are not thoroughly understood. However, the scientists are explaining in their researches that mankind will sooner or later face these dangers and based on scientific data, they are also explaining what their probable results could be. Some concrete examples concerning these are given below:

a. When the temperature will increase, evaporation from the large water surfaces (sea, lake, dam, river etc.) will also increase. As a result of this, climate will change regionally, agricultural products and forests will be damaged.

b. Glaciers will melt, and as a result of these, the water level in the lakes, seas and rivers will rise, the coastal regions will be under water, floods will occur and social migration will start.

c. Uneven global warming will create very destructive storms both in number and strengths

d. Due to global warming, icy tundra soil in Siberia and Canada will melt and will become swamps. Abundant quantity of swamp gas (methane) will form here and will be mixed into the atmosphere, and global warming will increase due to the increasing greenhouse gases and this way, vicious cycle will start.

The examples can be increased. However, even these limited examples show how big this ecological danger potential, which is encountered by mankind, is.
Caricaturists Association, TEMA Foundation and Cartoon Publishing had organized this contest aiming to direct people for focusing more on this matter by describing through caricatures that mankind will sooner or later face these dangers and by focusing on their probable results and also aiming to create an attitude and behavioral change in the society in order to slow down this process.

• The contest is open for all the amateur and professional caricaturists.
• The caricature may be published or awarded. Technique is free. Can be colored or black and white. The dimensions A4 (21 x 29.7)
• Contest caricatures can be sent only through internet.
• Awards: By the end of each month, the best 3 caricatures of that month will be selected and 20 saplings will be planted in TEKÝRDAÐ Memorial forest on their behalf. An introductory sign will be erected on the plantation region.
• The works that are sent to the contest will be exhibited through internet.
• By the end of the year, those works awarded and those works to be determined by the selection committee will be collected in a CD and will be sent to the owners of the works as free of charge.
• The caricatures of the contest, whether awarded or not, may be exhibited in the introductory announcements of the contest and they can be published in books, magazines, posters, postcards. Copyrights will not be paid to the owners of the works due to these publications.
• In case they are used for other purposes or by third parties, then permission will be obtained from the owner of the work.
• Those who send their works to the contest, will also indicate whether they can be used or not, in the t-shirts to be produced by TEMA Foundation’s Economic Management in order to obtain revenue.
• The utilization rights of the works are for Türkiye.
• The caricatures may be used in postcards for introductory purposes.
The artists participating in the contest will be deemed to accept all the participation conditions.

This contest is organized by Caricaturists Association, TEMA Foundation and Cartoon Publishing.

Since environmental disasters are continuous, our contest will also continue without interruption.
